Will a back seat extender fit your car?
If you drive a sedan, a hatchback, a wagon, an SUV or a crew-cab truck, it fits. Set up, the Buckle & Bark back seat extender is 140 cm (55 in) wide and 113.5 cm (44.7 in) from the seat base to the front seatbacks. It hangs from your own headrest posts on adjustable straps, so there's no model-specific version to choose.
How big is the Buckle & Bark back seat extender?
It's 140 cm (55 in) across. Front to back it runs 113.5 cm (44.7 in), in two sections: 54.5 cm (21.5 in) sitting on the bench and 59 cm (23 in) bridging the footwell. The side panels stand 80 cm (31.5 in) tall against your doors, and the rear panel is 47 cm (18.5 in).
Which cars does it fit?
It's built for the vehicles most people drive, and the straps adjust to your headrest posts, so the same extender goes in all of them.
- Sedans and hatchbacks: Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Avalon.
- Compact and mid-size SUVs: Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Tesla Model Y, Jeep Wrangler.
- Larger SUVs and wagons: Subaru Outback, Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer.
- Crew-cab trucks: the bench is wider than most, so the extender sits inboard of the doors and your dog gets the full flat span.
How do I check it will fit my car?
Measure the width of your back bench, door card to door card, at the seat base. Email that number with your car's make, model and year to support@buckleandbark.com, or put it in the fit form on the product page, and we'll tell you how it will sit.
You also get 30 days with it in your car. Your dog on your back seat is the real test, and that's the one the guarantee covers.
Back seat extender, hammock, seat cover or booster: which does your dog need?
Start with what you want your dog to do back there.
- If you want a medium or big dog to lie down across the whole back, get a hard-bottom back seat extender. It covers the footwell gap with a rigid platform, so the bench and the gap become one flat floor.
- If your main goal is keeping hair and mud off the seat, a hammock seat cover does that. It's a fabric sling clipped to the front and rear headrests. Fabric alone holds up the middle, so it dips when your dog stands on it.
- If you only want the seat covered, a bench seat cover stops at the front edge of the cushion and leaves the footwell open.
- An inflatable extender fills the footwell with an air chamber that you pump up before the drive.
- For one small dog who wants to see out of the window, a booster seat raises them to window height.
For a medium or big dog, the choice usually comes down to the first two, and the difference between them is the base.
What does a hard base change?
Three rigid boards are sewn inside the platform. When your dog stands in the middle, the span over the footwell keeps its shape, and that's what makes it a bed rather than a cover. The first drive tells you. They circle once, work out that the floor goes all the way across now, and flop down with a sigh.
- Quilted panels stand upright against both doors and catch the claw marks and muddy paw prints.
- Mesh windows in both panels keep the air moving and leave your view from the driver's seat clear.
- A flap pocket on the inner panel holds the leash, the treats and the poop bags.
- Padded tabs and adjustable nylon straps with metal snap hooks loop over your headrest posts. It goes on in about a minute, and you don't need tools.
- The woven fabric is water repellent, so mud and wet fur wipe off with a damp cloth.
- When you need the seat for people again, zips let the panels collapse flat.
How much does a back seat extender cost?
Hard-bottom extenders from the other brands we checked sell for $128.95 to $169.95. Ours is $89.99, down from $119.99, with free shipping. It leaves a US warehouse within 1 to 2 business days and reaches you 3 to 8 business days after that. If you have two dogs or two cars, put two in the cart and 10% comes off on its own, which is $17.98 back on the pair.
What if it doesn't suit your car or your dog?
You get 30 days. Fit it, drive with it and let your dog live on it for a month. If it isn't right, email us for a full refund of the item price, and it doesn't have to be unused.
